This project was about “attention.” We wanted to capture the exact moment at which the body goes from not touching the water’s surface to making contact. We were nervous, because,
as they say, “You never know until you try.”
But the art director, Mr. Nagai, made me feel it was
fun anyway. He was energetic and pleasan (and at times adamant!). He’s great at what he does.
As the big moment arrived, the shutter closed. When the models hit the water’s surface, they could not maintain the “cool and emotionless” expression we instructed them to. Their reflexes got in the way. The fear of an impact makes us tense up. But that wasn’t part of the plan!
What should we do?! But when we took a closer look on the monitor at those very realistic faces, they turned out to be quite intriguing!
We realized we had been narrow-minded. We then had the models try doing different facial expressions: smiles, ecstasy. Their appearance and expressions gradually improved. As we repeated the process, the models, art director and photographer all started getting on the same page. That heartfelt sensation of pure fun was what made being at the shoot so awesome.
When that ideal that had eluded us finally clicked for everyone, it allowed us to take many wonderful photos. You never know until you try. That’s why I love photography.

I think that a naked woman, au naturel, is “Brain Drool.” But just being nude is uninteresting.
I wanted to photograph a woman who is nude in a way I’d never seen before. It had to be
a Brain Drool-inducing moment I had yet to experience. So that’s how we came up with
the “woman about to splash down” project.
The instant right before the nipples come into contact with the water’s surface... That’s Brain Drool, isn’t it?! This inscrutable determination
is what led us to attempt the shoot.
When we tried to photograph a woman’s body about to hit the water, the models always ended up grimacing because they were doing a belly-flop. But I thought that if their expressions expressed arousal instead,
then these photographs would become Brain Drool in a peculiar sort of way.
When we looked at the models doing belly-flop after belly-flop with happy faces, we felt liberated and, in the end, we all jumped in and skinny-dipped.
