Japanese Bijin-ga (paintings of beautiful women) deeply impressed European great painting masters with surprise and fascination, and accepted with applause in the era of “Japonism”.
I’m sure those masters dripped and dripped their “brain drool” when they saw it.
Japanese hair style and Kimono which had developed in a unique way.
Gestures or expressions of the Japanese women who wore them.
As a Japanese person and a photographer,
I have always had an irrepressible urge to shoot something like this.
They occupy a unique space amidst the silence...
Minimal colors without excess
Dignified look in eyes...
Soft, beautiful curving lines...
And most important of all, the way of life as women expressed
I am really happy if these pictures grab people on an impulse, and have them breathtaking or fascinating.

この写真を制作した表現者全員が同じ目標を持ち、
美しさを表現したものです。
日本人の一人の女性として、
美しさの表現を「女性」を用い、
輪郭、所作、心情、限りなく要素をそぎ落とし、
伝えたいメッセージを明確にする事で
「伝える写真」にできたと思っています。
100年後も日本の表面だけではとどまらず
内面の美しさも表現する一枚絵になる
廃れない写真になればと
心から想い、願っています。

The goal of all the creative staff who
produced these photographs were
the same: “Expression of Japanese beauty.”
As one Japanese woman,
I expressed the beauty by means of “Gayko”.
I’m confident that we could create
“Conveying photos” by pruning away
elements -contours, posturing, sentiment,
space ultimately to make
the message we want to convey clear.
My heartfelt wish is for these
photos to have a permanence
that will still represent not only
a skin-deep but also inner beauty
of Japan a century from now.

「ジャポニズム」当時のヨーロッパの絵画の巨匠たちに驚嘆と心酔を与え、
喝采によって受け入れられた日本の美人画。
それを見た巨匠たちは間違いなく「脳よだれ」をダラダラとたらしたであろう。
独特の進化を遂げてきた日本髪や着物、
そしてそれをまとった日本女性の仕草や表情。
日本人として、また写真家として、いつかは絶対撮りたいと思っていた。
静寂の中にある独特の間。余計なものを削ぎ落とした色。
凛とした眼差し。柔らかく優しい曲線。
そしてなにより、
彼女たちが発露する女性としての生きる姿。
思わず立ち止まって、はっとしたり、
うっとりしたりしてもらえたら嬉しいなぁ。
